Press Release on imprisoned journalist, Reeyot Alemu

The Center for the Rights of Ethiopian Women (CREW) is gravely concerned about the imprisoned Ethiopian journalist, Reeyot Alemu’s health condition and allegations of mistreatment.
Jailed Ethiopian journalist Reeyot Alemu named winner of 2013
Imprisoned Ethiopian journalist Reeyot Alemu has been named the winner of the 2013 UNESCO-Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize.
Reeyot Alemu, 32, is an internationally honored female journalist who has been an outspoken critic of the Ethiopian government’s human rights violations. She was arrested 2 years ago by the Ethiopian government and sentenced to 14 years in prison. Even though Reeyot Alemu’s charges have been reduced to 5 years, there is serious concern about her health and allegations of mistreatment while she is incarcerated. Some months ago Reeyot was placed in solitary confinement for 2weeks. A tumor in her breast remains untreated because she is denied access to medical care. In July 2013, a delegation of the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights was denied access to Kaliti prison to meet with Reeyot Alemu.
In August 2013, it was reported that Reeyot wrote an open letter from prison criticizing Ethiopia’s Anti-Terrorism Proclamation and the International Women’s Media Foundation published it. Recent reports from Ethiopia have revealed that Reeyot Alemu was on hunger strike protesting mistreatment at her cell in Kaliti prison. In order to punish her for her hunger strike, the prison officials denied her all visitations by her relatives and friends. They later allowed visitation by all except by her fiancé and her younger sister. According to CPJ she has stopped the hunger strike after five days on Sunday, September 15th.
Reeyot is one among many journalists and political prisoners who are languishing in the notorious Kaliti prison. In 2012, Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) named Ethiopia as one of the ten countries where press freedom suffered the most.
In 2012, the International Women’s Media Foundation honored Reeyot Alemu with its Courage in Journalism Award. In May 2013, UNESCO recognized Reeyot Alemu’s commitment to freedom of expression with its Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize.
CREW asks that the Ethiopian government ensure Reeyot’s safety and allow her access to medical treatment. Furthermore, visitation rights by her friends and family members as well as international human rights organizations should be allowed.
CREW appeals to all international human rights organizations to highlight Reeyot Alemu’s case and continue to advocate for her release from prison.

A prisoner of conscience’s call for sanctions against Ethiopia

European aid has transformed my country’s economy but also props up one-party rule. Let EU donors give us democracy

To Ethiopia’s archaic left, which dominates the ruling party, the new euphemism for the west is neoliberal. Compared to the jargon of bygones days – imperialists – when Lenin and Mao were still in vogue, neoliberal sounds decidedly wimpy. But this hardly matters to Ethiopia’s ruling party. What it seeks is a bogeyman to tamp down rising expectations for multiparty democracy.
To this end, plying nationalist sentiment is the easy option. And so, we get a tale of heroes and villains in which there is a defender of national ethos, honor and economic growth (inevitably, the ruling party), and a foreign horde bent on subversion, domination and economic exploitation (infallibly, the west: the neoliberals).
In this narrative, Ethiopia’s recent economic growth, amidst a global slump, is ascribed to the stability afforded by one-party rule, as in China – and not, as many experts are prone to point out, the generosity of donor countries. Hence the paradox of well-intentioned European money promoting Chinese interests in one of the more important economies in Africa.
Aggregate aid is to the Ethiopian economy what Obama’s fiscal stimulus was to the American economy: minus these injections, both economics would suffer catastrophically. The theatrical blustering of the Ethiopian government notwithstanding, donor countries have a make-or-break power over the Ethiopa’s prosperity.
And European aid has done wonderful things in Ethiopia. Despite the government’s ingratitude, we – the disenfranchised majority – are grateful and appreciative. We have improved access to schools, health facilities and roads because of donor benevolence. But an aid policy tied only to economic and social needs is only half complete; a comprehensive approach entails a linkage with politics.

Ideally, aid should have an impact on GDP growth. Ethiopia now ranks in the world’s top ten fastest-growing economies, the pride of Eurocrats. But aid should also increase trade between donor and recipient, as was the case with US aid to Europe under the Marshall Plan. By this measure, Europe has failed. Ethiopian trade with China has exploded, while stagnating or shrinking with Europe. Again, China wins without lifting a finger.
Aid should also strengthen democratic institutions. Here is where European donors’ policy falters dramatically. The unintended consequence of indifference to democratic accountability translates into the subsidy and reinforcement of tyranny. The time for reassessment has come.
After two decades of one-party rule, Ethiopia is visibly aching for change. Even the traditionally placid Sufi Muslim community is increasingly restless. There is clear danger of communal strife.
As a prisoner of conscience committed to peaceful transition to democracy, I urge Europe to apply economic sanctions against Ethiopia. What short-term pain may result will be compensated by long-term gain. A pledge to re-engage energetically with a democratic Ethiopia would act as a catalyst for reform.
Sanctions need to be targeted – and the continuity of basic humanitarian aid without precondition is a moral necessity. But the EU should also impose travel bans on Ethiopian officials implicated in human rights violations.
We live in an age of global expectations. Our hopes have converged in many ways, none more so than in our democratic aspirations. The moral imperative is for Europe to align with the reform movement in Ethiopia. It is time to stand up for democracy.

SMNE Applauds Non-Violent, Peaceful Struggle in Ethiopia as TPLF/ERPDF Tries to Intimidate and Label Opposition as Extremists

September 5, 2013

We in the Solidarity Movement for a New Ethiopia (SMNE) are deeply disturbed by illegal and violent actions by the TPLF/EPRDF that prevented the Semayawi Party from carrying out its peaceful rally on Sunday, September 1. Despite receiving the go ahead from authorities to stage this lawful rally nearly two months ago, with no warning, federal police stormed and ransacked Semayawi [also known as the Blue Party] headquarters on Saturday, August 31, 2013.
After first cutting off all electricity to their office, the TPLF/EPRDF police officers forcibly took over the office of the Semayawi Party. Leaders and volunteers working on final preparations for the next day’s rally were beaten and kicked by authorities before being detained for a number of hours. After further harassment, interrogation and intimidation in detention, they were released, but the federal police maintained control of Semayawi headquarters until the next morning.federal police maintained control of Semayawi headquarters
During that time, the federal police ransacked their office and confiscated and/or destroyed their computers, flyers, flags, T-shirts, banners, office documents and nearly all other Semayawi property; essentially making it impossible for the Semayawi party to move ahead with their plans for the rally.
Despite photographs and numerous corroborative testimonies by victims and witnesses of TPLF/EPRDF involvement in all of this, it is no surprise that the TPLF/EPRDF gave a very different account of what happened to the international media. When the Semayawi party requested a permit for the rally two months ago, they had allegedly been given a verbal okay, assuring party leaders they could proceed with planning; however, just this week, the TPLF/EPRDF reversed their authorization. Instead, the TPLF/EPRDF made plans to conduct their own rally, calling on the people to come out to applaud their government for its “religious tolerance” and to condemn and report religious extremists among them; particularly pointing fingers at Ethiopian Muslims who have been peacefully rallying for religious freedom for nearly two years, exasperating TPLF/EPRDF officials.
Rumors spread quickly that the TPLF/EPRDF intended to hijack the rally from the Semayawi Party as local authorities throughout Addis Ababa began an intensive campaign to pressure people to participate in the pro-government rally through the use of threats, bribes and intimidation, even promising to provide transportation to the rally so they would have no excuse not to attend. However, because the TPLF/ERPDF may have feared that Semayawi protestors would overtake their event, the federal police made sure they could not follow through by storming their headquarters and detaining the organizers. According to some sources, the TPLF/ERPDF event which was to draw 200,000 people, reportedly, drew fewer than 1,500 attendees.
The TPLF/EPRDF rally appeared to be done in conjunction with a large religious conference on inter-religious dialogue and inter-religious tolerance the Ethiopian Ministry of Federal Affairs and the Ethiopian Inter Religious Council had called earlier in the week. We believe the aim of the conference was to reassert TPLF/EPRDF authority over religious groups within the country and to delegitimize religious communities like the Ethiopian Muslims who were objecting to government control of their internal religious affairs. The government-controlled website, Walta Info, later reported that the conference was organized by King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz International Centre for Inter-religious and Inter-cultural Dialogue (KAICIID) along with the African Union Commission (AUC) and the United Religions Initiative-Africa.[i]
According to a news release on August 27 from Walta Info, the conference theme was, “We shall strive to realize Ethiopia’s renaissance through strengthening the value of religious coexistence and respecting constitutional provisions.”[ii]  At the conference, Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn called on religious groups and their followers to“unmask undercover operations of religious fundamentalists” and warned that the government would continue taking legal measures against religious fundamentalists who promoted intolerance under the disguise of religion [paraphrased].[iii]
In truth, the real “undercover extremists” and “promoters of intolerance,” who need no unmasking, are the TPLF/EPRDF.  However, their real goal is hegemony, including over the religious, even if they must call them extremists to do so; or, worse yet, to actually commit extremist acts in their name to sway opinion and gain support—a tactic used repeatedly since TPLF/ERPDF’s beginnings.
The TPLF/ERPDF, founded on an atheistic belief-system, see people of genuine faith—from any religious background—as a threat to their control and have pitted themselves against them. From the beginning, the TPLF/ERPDF has closely followed a Marxist-Leninist inspired plan laid out in 1993 where religious tolerance was only condoned if the religious remained silent or if their first allegiance was to the party of the TPLF/ERPDF. As one can read from the TPLF/ERPDF’s guidebook, “TPLF/EPRDF’s Strategies for Establishing its Hegemony & Perpetuating its Rule,[iv] one will see the plan to use and control religious groups. The following quote is from the 64-page Amharic document’s subsection titled; Religious Organizations:
These[religious organizations]are always propaganda tools and in most cases they align themselves with the reactionary forces in the society. Therefore, these organizations should be used to disseminate the views of Revolutionary Democracy within a certain limit. If that is not possible we should try to curtail their obstructionist activities. The scientific content of the school education is one means of countering the damage which religious propaganda can cause. In the process of countering these organizations’ influence, the focus should not be on the leadership but rather on their branches at the village level; the religious leaders at the grassroots level are closer to the people. Without denying them due respect, we should mold their views, curtail their propaganda against Revolutionary Democracy, and even use them to serve our end.  Focus on the lower level, however, does not mean the upper echelon should be forgotten. We should forge a close relationship with this stratum, find out and exploit to our advantage their internal contradictions, and at least disable them from coordinating their propaganda against us. If possible we should use them to disseminate the propaganda of Revolutionary Democracy.”
In fact, the conference and pro-government rally appear to be a TPLF/ERPDF attempt to discredit Ethiopian Muslims who have been peacefully rallying for nearly two years in response to TPLF/ERPDF religious interference, including the TPLF/EPRDF appointment of pro-government religious leaders, who they claim are trying to indoctrinate them, against their will, with a foreign brand of Islam. Other religious groups claim similar interference, all in violation of the Ethiopian Constitution that guarantees freedom of religion.
One of the goals of the Semayawi rally was to demand the release of political prisoners and Muslim leaders, the latter who had been organizers of previous peaceful rallies. It also should be remembered that Muslims, Christians and others joined with the Semayawi party in their first rally in June 2013 and the greatest fear was surely that all of these groups might join together and hijack the entire façade of the government to accuse others of what they were doing themselves.
The SMNE, which represents the diverse people of Ethiopia, stands in solidarity with the Semayawi Party, UDJ [Unity for Democracy and Justice], Ethiopian Muslims, people of all faiths and all Ethiopians who are seeking their God-given rights and an end to autocratic, one-party rule. The SMNE strongly condemns the reprehensible attack by the TPLF/EPRDF against law-abiding citizens. The Semayawi party is not threatening violence or extremism. It is a peaceful movement to simply demand that the Ethiopian government follows the rule of law, respects the Constitution, repeals the draconian anti-terrorism law and restores political, human and religious rights to the people. The attack on the Semayawi party is an attack on all Ethiopians who simply yearn for a more peaceful, just and democratic society. When the rights of these people are violated, the rights of all Ethiopians are violated for no one is free until we all are free!
We applaud the Semayawi Party and its extraordinary leadership, which in its commitment to a non-violent, peaceful struggle, has become a source of inspiration to many of us. Since 2005, when the TPLF/EPRDF killed 193 people and jailed opposition leaders, no other political groups have emerged to challenge the government until they did earlier this year. Though many of the leaders of the Semayawi Party are still young, they have demonstrated great discipline, intellect, courage, perseverance, resilience and a vision for an inclusive Ethiopia. They have chosen a peaceful struggle, a model which has succeeded in India under Mahatma Gandhi, in the U.S. during the Civil Rights movement under Dr. Martin Luther King, and in South Africa under the leadership of Nelson Mandela in the ANC movement.
For the Semayawi and UDJ Parties to take this path is a better prospect for assuring that Ethiopia does not descend into chaos, violence and social upheaval that may be nearly impossible to recover from for years, if ever. Look at the great human and economic costs to the people of Syria, Egypt and Libya. Kudos to this committed group of young Ethiopians for the maturity, restraint and vision they have shown. On the part of the SMNE, we will do our best to present your noble cause to the donor countries and peace-loving people throughout the world.
The TPLF/ERPDF is afraid of this kind of movement and it is why they are trying to intimidate the leaders and to destroy Semayawi resources. Don’t doubt the value and efficacy of a peaceful struggle. What they are doing we believe is the right thing and we encourage them to continue with this approach. We hope they will continue to stand for principles that will not only confront the TPLF/ERPDF but that they will also work to bring healing and restoration to Ethiopia. Our message to them is not to doubt themselves when some may question their position or their age. They should keep in mind that throughout the world, change has often come through the work of younger members of society. Ghandi was only in his thirties as was Dr. King.
The same accolades are deserved for those Ethiopian Muslim leaders who have persevered for nearly two years in a peaceful struggle for their human and civil rights, especially the right to pursue their faith in a genuine manner. In a country like our own, where people are so purposely divided by calculated actions of the TPLF/ERPDF in order to maintain minority rule, we must affirm the value of every person regardless of ethnicity, religion, political view, regional background, gender, age or any other characteristics. Our best guarantee of our own sustainable freedom in Ethiopia is in protecting the rights of other Ethiopians, whether or not they are like us.
We should never doubt the goal of building an Ethiopia where our people are valued by their humanity rather than by their ethnicity, where each Ethiopian cares about the well being of others as they care for themselves because we are all created with intrinsic worth by God.
An ethnic-based system where one ethnicity takes control of the society and where they receive unearned preference over everyone else is in violation of this principle. It will give birth to instability, insecurity, and conflict. The path to a New Ethiopia will not be through promoting violence and eradicating the TPLF or their supporters but through reconciliation—through acknowledging the past and correcting entrenched injustice.
As Ethiopians make plans for the next rallies and other efforts, we urge all to work with other parties, religious groups and peace-loving Ethiopians who share these principles. As you do, we in the SMNE will stand with you in solidarity.
May God help us see the right path and not be confused by emotions and false promises of quick fixes that lead us down a path of destruction, blood and revenge that has obstructed Ethiopia from moving anywhere. There is no room for ethnic-based domination, religious-based domination or power-grab domination by another dictator but only for a government that is of the people, by the people and for the people. Ethiopians have already suffered too much.
We seek a God-honoring path that will bring human liberation rather than ethnic, religious or regional liberation. May God lead us to renewed life as we value, nurture and protect the humanity of each and every one of us, putting humanity before ethnicity or any other distinctions, for no one is free until all are free.

An Armed Force that comes out from Oppression

September 4, 2013

An Armed Force that comes out from
As all know Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has been in power for more than 22 years in Ethiopia. TPLF took power with force and it rules the country with force applying draconian laws that deny basic human rights and the right of the people to elect its own government. Anyone who expresses its firm opposition to the TPLF regime in Ethiopia is convicted for terrorist act, citing the controversial ‘terrorist proclamation’ adopted by the regime to crush the opposition. Since TPLF took power, there is no free media, and the country became one of the countries with lots of exiled and jailed journalists.
The so called Ethnic federalism introduced into the country by TPLF turns to be ethnic racism, that threaten the sovereignty of the country. The Ethiopian ethnic federalism is a tool used to implement the dangerous divide and rule principle of TPLF. The current ‘Ethnic federalism’ in Ethiopia is properly designed to create hatred and suspicion among ethnic groups in the country. As a result there were lots of incidents where thousands were massacred after different ethnic groups are turned to each other.
Election is becoming a joke in Ethiopia. The election in 2005 was the first and the last resembling more or less democratic at its initial phase. The result was however stolen by TPLF and the woyane junta declared victory. During the 2010 election, TPLF declared a 96.9% victory which no one on earth can believe it is a democratic election. In the current Ethiopia, peaceful demonstrators get killed on streets and arrested with no conviction. Muslim brothers and sisters are the living examples who have faced this punishment every day at this time.
From a country with the described suffocating political atmosphere, Ginbot7 Popular Force (GPF) came out saying ‘enough is enough’ and calls all Ethiopians to stand by its side and fight for rule of law and justice in the country.
Ginbot7 popular Force has a vision of a vibrant and democratic Ethiopia, wherein the sovereign will of the Ethiopian people becomes the source of all political power, the full range of people’s rights are respected and the national unity, security and welfare of the country is adequately defended.
Ginbot7 Popular Force’s mission is forceful removal of the dictatorial regime of TPLF, usher the condition for peaceful and democratic transition, play a part in the creation of a strong and capable national defense, security and police forces whose only allegiance is to the constitution of the country, thereby, bringing an end to the existing affiliation of these institutions to the political forces in the country. It is therefore we give a positive response to this very timely call and support GPF.
In order you know more about GPF and can support it, a grand Fundraising Event is organized for the force in Oslo Norway on September 28, 2013.
Come and support G7PF!
Supporting GPF will shorten TPLF’s rule in Ethiopia!

BBC – Ethiopia denies crackdown on Semayawi party

September 2, 2013

BBC – Some 100 members of Ethiopia’s opposition Semayawi (Blue) party were arrested and some badly beaten over the weekend, the party says.
Party chairman Yilekal Getachew said equipment such as sound systems were confiscated ahead of a rally on Sunday which was banned.
Some 1,500 people attended the pro-government rally against extremism
Some 1,500 people attended the pro-government rally against extremism
Communication Minister Shimeles Kemal denied there had been a crackdown.
The government said the venue had already been booked by a pro-government group condemning religious extremism.
The governing EPRDF maintains strict control over public life in Ethiopia.
The public protest Semayawi organised in June was the first major demonstration on the streets of Addis Ababa since 2005 when hundreds of protesters were killed in violence.
It was called to demand the release of jailed journalists and activists.
The rally planned for Sunday was to call for political reforms.
Mr Shimeles said that any group which wanted to organise a public protest had to seek a permit.
He said the authorities could not refuse to grant a permit but could insist that the event be held at a different time or place to that requested.
Hailemariam Desalegn took office as prime minister a year ago, following the death of long-time leader Meles Zenawi.

Semayawi attacked, beaten up and ransacked

September 1, 2013

by Abebe Gellaw
In the evening of Saturday August 31, Semayawi Party headquarters around Ginfle, Addis Ababa, was buzzing like a bee hive as nearly one hundred party activists and organizers were busy making posters, writing slogans, stacking flags and other paraphernalia needed for a colorful rally. They were making the final push for a peaceful demonstration they had planned to hold the next morning with their supporters.Semayawi attacked, beaten up and ransacked
These peaceful and law-abiding citizens were doing what true political activists were supposed to do. They wanted to demand justice and freedom. They wanted to petition their rulers to respects the rights of citizens who are being routinely abused, tortured and killed in broad daylight. They only wanted to ask the thuggish TPLF regime to free all prisoners of conscience jailed on trumped-up terrorism and treason charges. They wanted to demand the TPLF to respect its own constitution. They were not preparing to commit acts of terrorism or bank robbery.
Suddenly there was a blackout. Electricity to Semayawi’s headquarters was cut off. Apparently hundreds of heavily armed ‘federal police’ officers had already besieged the office like terrorists.
Yidenekachew Kebede, the party’s legal affairs head and coordinator of the rally was heading to his office. ESAT reached him in good time on his cell phone. He was describing the situation in detail. He was very upset that such a criminality happens with impunity. He was outraged that the TPLF is treating Ethiopians worse than prisoners of war in their own country.
The young lawyer was outraged that the constitution, which the TPLF never respected, was being violated by armed thugs and criminals again. It was another evidence of lawlessness and tyranny that the TPLF has imposed on the people of Ethiopia. Those who were eager to demand freedom and justice for their people became victims of criminality. While he was telling ESAT that his colleagues and friends were under siege, a federal police officer snatched his phone and the line was cut off. Apparently he was detained.
TPLF federal squad broke into the office and ransacked and beat Semayawi’s leaders and members. The party’s chairman Eng. Yilkal Getnet was also arrested and taken to a police station around Gedam Sefer. The thugs reportedly targeted everyone and even savagely attacked and kicked women. They detained all of Semayawi’s operatives found on the party’s premises for hours, kicked and tortured them. Scores of people were even made to roll over mud and dung in a bid to humiliate and degrade them. They were stat at and insulted by TPLF’s thugs.
According to Eng. Yilkal, he was released after a few hours. Other members who were also said to have been roughed up, beaten up and tortured were also freed. But the headquarters has reportedly been trashed. Documents, equipment, and all the materials prepared for the rally were taken away by the federal squad.
Ethiopians in the Diaspora has been expressing outrage on Facebook and Paltalk rooms. What has been the focus of angry discussion is how long the state-sponsored terrorism can go on. The decision to launch an illegal attack against a political party operating legally is another affront to law and order. TPLF’s thuggery and lawlessness has posed serious challenges to every law-abiding citizen. People are abused and tortured without any ground.
Semayawi is a relatively budding political party that should have been accorded protection. But TPLF’s paranoid has reached a critical and dangerous point. The more cornered it is, the more dangerous it is becoming. The attack against Semawi only reveals the level of fear gripping the TPLF and its cronies.
In a press release it issued, Semayawi has vowed to press for justice and rule of law. It emphasized that nothing will distract it from making demands and voicing the concerns of the people of Ethiopia.
In the meantime, Muslim Ethiopians are also being hunted down across the country. TPLF organized a rally in the metropolis on the day and at the venue where Semayawi had planned to stage a protest demonstration. The worst part is that TPLF is trying to create religious conflict among Christians and Muslims. The two religions have co-existed harmoniously for over a millennium. The futile efforts only reveal the fact that TPLF is desperate to survive.
No matter what the TPLF does, the struggle for equality, dignity, justice and freedom continues….
